The 2025 income tax campaign in Spain is about to begin, and it is important to be aware of the key dates. Knowing the deadlines will help you stay organized and avoid rushing or facing potential penalties for filing your return late.

What is the most common question?

Many taxpayers wonder when the income tax campaign starts and when it ends, and also what they need in order to access their tax data or draft return.

Understanding this is essential so you can review the information that the Spanish Tax Agency already has about you and prepare your return correctly.

Income tax campaign deadlines

For the 2025 tax year, the expected deadlines are the following:

  • Start of the campaign (online filing): April 8, 2026From this date, taxpayers will be able to submit their tax return online.

  • Telephone or in-person filing:

    • From May 6, 2026: filing by phone will be available.

    • From June 1, 2026: filing in person at the offices of the Spanish Tax Agency will begin.

  • End of the campaign: June 30, 2026This is the last day to file your income tax return.

  • If your tax return results in tax payable and you choose direct debit, the filing deadline is June 25, 2026.

How to obtain your reference number

To check your tax data or file your return, you must identify yourself on the Spanish Tax Agency website. One of the most common methods is the reference number.

To obtain it, you will need:

  • Your DNI or NIE

  • If you have a DNI: the validity date or, if it is permanent, the issuance date

  • If you have a NIE: the support number

  • The amount from box 505 of last year’s tax return. If you did not file a return last year, you will be asked for the last five digits of one of your bank accounts

With this information, you can generate your reference number and access your tax data.

Where to find the support number if you have a NIE

If you are a foreign resident in Spain and have a NIE, the system will ask for the document support number.

You can find this number on:

  • Your Foreigner Identity Card (TIE)

  • Or on the EU Citizen Registration Certificate

It usually appears on the lower or back part of the document and consists of a combination of letters and numbers.

Conclusion

The income tax campaign has a limited timeframe, so it is advisable not to wait until the last minute. Carefully reviewing your tax data is key to avoiding mistakes and making sure you claim all the deductions available to you.
